Working at Heights - Site Safety

As part of our ongoing commitment to developing local capability through the Hatanga–BY Group partnership, more than 20 members of our Saints of Melanesia Build project team recently completed a Working at Heights Safety Training session.

The training comes at a timely moment for the site, with roof steel and sheeting work now moving ahead. It follows on from the scaffold safety training delivered to the team earlier this year, forming part of a continued program of hands-on learning designed to build strong, lasting safety capability among our local workforce.

Led by Partnership Expertise

The session was led by Mick Allison, BY Group Safety Manager, and covered a comprehensive range of topics essential to working safely at height, including:

  • Harness selection and correct fit
  • Lanyard systems
  • Hazard awareness
  • Hands-on practical exercises to reinforce correct procedures on site

By combining theory with practical, real-world exercises, the training ensured every participant left with the confidence and skills to apply safe practices in their daily work.

A Simple Message – Front of Mind

A key takeaway for the team, and one that will guide how work at height is carried out going forward, is simple but powerful:

No edge protection. No safe platform. No approval. No work.

This message reinforces that safety is never negotiable, and that every team member has the responsibility, and the authority, to stop work if the right conditions aren’t in place.

Growing Pacific Capability, Together

This training session is another example of the strong partnership between Hatanga and BY Group, working together to grow local skills and capability across all our project sites. Investing in our people through practical, industry-led training not only strengthens safety outcomes but builds a lasting skillset within our local workforce.

Thank you to Mick Allison and the wider BY Group team for their continuous support.
